While loading the dishwasher, Jessie was still smiling about their morning and Dirk’s vow to always have her back. He always had. Even when she was pushing him away, he was the one person who never gave up on her.

Fiona stepped back into the kitchen, bringing Jessie out of her sexy dreams. “Did you need anything, Fee?”

“Lord no, those omelets were huge and too yummy to stop eating. I wanted to make sure you didn’t need help with cleanup.”

Jessie smiled. “You’re sweet, Fee, but I’m shoving most of the dishes in the dishwasher, and that just leaves a few to wash.”

“You mind if I stay and talk?”

“Absolutely not.” Jessie took down a couple of Mason jar mugs from the cupboard. “Go ahead and have a seat.” She filled a mug with coffee and put it in front of Fiona. Filling the second, she took it over to the sink and got back to work.

“The conversation seems to revolve around the danger with the fires.”

Jessie met the other woman’s gaze. “Sorry about that.”

“Oh no, I don’t mean that’s a bad thing…well it is a bad thing…but what I meant was we haven’t really gotten a chance to just talk.”

“I know. Today we should ban all talk of fires and the assholes who set them and keep it to our lives.”

“I’ll drink to that. So, you and Dirk are doing the whole vow thing next month?”

“We are. I can’t wait. If you and Hunter can stay a few days longer, we’d love to have you. It’s not going to be fancy at all. Us, family, close friends, and Dirk’s Grandpa Bruce acting as officiant. Don’t tell Dirk though; he thinks Gramps and I have been talking because Gramps is trying to steal me.” She winked at Fiona.

“Oh that’s sweet. I think we’ll have to head back before, but thanks for the invite. Your family?”

Jessie shook her head. “They’ve politely declined. But Dirk’s family, both civilian, Marine, and hotshot, and my smokejumper crew those are my family.”

“So until Dirk, you really didn’t have anyone as support after what you went through.”

“Well, Sophie, but it’s hard trying to tell a civilian, and I couldn’t admit to the assault. And of course, the other wildland firefighters were tremendous. But no one was able to break through the walls until Dirk. He just has a way about him…” She shrugged. “I can’t explain it… He’s just…” She frowned, trying to think of the word. She shrugged again. “There’s not a word for it. How about you?”

Fiona rolled her mug between her palms. “I didn’t have anyone who cared until Hunter rescued me.” She exhaled a laugh. “An unplanned rescue, mind you. But then I was accepted into his SEAL family. So you could say the same for me; Hunter’s family became mine.”

“I’m glad you found them, Fee…or I should say they found you.”

“Same here with you and Dirk. Dammit we deserve the men we got.”

Jessie laughed and put away the last pan. “Damn right we do. Though sometimes I don’t believe Dirk deserved the trouble he got with me.
